ID2117 - The Art of Imaginative Sketching Review

ID2117

Taken in: AY21/22 Semester 1
Lecturer: Min Chieh Vincent Leow

Grading:
  • 50% - Week 3 Submission
  • 50% - Week 6 Submission
*note that Vincent is quite flexible and may take into account other weeks' submissions.

ID2117 is a 6-week module on the fundamentals of drawing. In the first few weeks, you'll first learn the technique for drawing straight lines, circles, followed by 1 and 2-point perspective. During class, Vincent teaches, and you do live drawing activities (Bring a pencil and some paper!), and there is weekly homework to be submitted before the next class.

This was one of the more refreshing classes I took this semester. Vincent is really, really nice and because the module covers the bare basic, fundamentals of drawing, anyone can take it. There were a few people with actual professional design background taking this module, but don't feel concerned about grades or measuring up. Vincent always has something good to say about everyone's submissions, regardless of skill level. Also, class size was about ~30 so it's really small and chill.

Drawing attention to the module's name, Imaginative sketching, the latter half of the module focuses less on fundamentals and more on trying to use your imagination. This includes exercises where you have to draw random things that come to your mind based on a prompt. Again, Vincent isn't too caught up about how polished or professional your work is. Of course, it'd be good if you applied the perspective or line drawing techniques he taught, but otherwise what he wants to see is an active imagination and participation.

I HIGHLY recommend this module. Since it's 2mc/6 weeks, it takes place twice a semester. It's a chill and fun module amidst everything else I had going on. My friends from ID also praised Vincent's teaching. You definitely do not need a background in art or design to take this.

Detailed Breakdown

Lesson Flow

In the first few weeks, you'll learn techniques for drawing. This includes:

  • How to draw lines (Straight, smooth curves, etc)
  • How to draw in 1 and 2-point perspective
  • How to draw 3D shapes and Circles in perspective

The rest of the weeks are dedicated to imagination or sketching exercises. For example, he'll give a blur picture, and ask you to draw what you see. Or, he'll give a picture and ask you to draw it in 4 mins, 2 mins, 1 min, 30s. That was so much fun.

Submissions

There is a weekly submission based on each week's activity. For example, in Week 3, you learn about 1-point perspective, so the homework is to draw your room or any location in 1-point perspective.

For Week 6 (Final submission), the prompt is different each semester. For ours, it was to design a recycling bin.

Although it's stated that only Week 3 and Week 6 submissions are graded at 50% each, Vincent mentioned that he will also take into account your other submissions. So nice! I honestly don't know what to expect from the grading as there's no rubric or grading scheme, but it doesn't matter, because this module is so fun I don't really care about the grade.

At the start of each class, Vincent picks out some submissions to showcase. That's when you can see some of the actual artistic talents, but he also has chosen some "bad" drawings to showcase how imaginative or creative they are, and always has something good to say.

Final Note

If you want to register for this module in the 2nd half of the semester, you may email Vincent or the module co-ordinator.

Expected grade: A??? idk

Actual grade: A+
